ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – This goal closed. Move along. Nothing to see here.
Senior Olivia McDonald netted a pair of first-half goals, and Rocky River notched a clean-sheet victory for a ninth time this season, as the Pirates defeated the Solon Comets, 2-0, on Monday night.
With the victory, Rocky River (12-3) is now 10-1 over its last 11 matches. Eight of those 10 wins has come via the shutout.
McDonald’s first goal of the night came 24 minutes in. River would protect that goal for six minutes and change and then add to it.
A long, 31st-minute shot by junior Annie O’Toole was mishandled by the Solon goalkeeper; McDonald was on the spot to pop it in and double the Pirate lead. With a trademark brand of ball control, patience and alert defense, the Pirates would ride that 2-0 lead for the remaining 49 minutes.
With the victory, Rocky River repaid Solon for a 3-1 loss to the Comets in Solon last season (Sept. 16, 2016).
The Pirates have now yielded a mere 11 goals in 15 matches. Their 0.73 goals-against average would rank fourth in program history.
McDonald’s pair of netfinders run her career point total up four notches to 90 points (38 goals, 14 assists). She is just the eighth Pirate to garner 90 points or more in a career.
