ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River held its 2017 awards ceremony on Monday, Nov. 13, and coaches Steve Stahl (Boys Cross Country) and Dee Zuercher (Girls Cross Country) had much hardware to disperse after a season that saw the boys squad advance to the Ohio Division II Tournament after a regional victory and the girls team finish as runners-up in the Great Lakes Conference.
Headlining the evening was senior Eddie Zuercher who won district and regional races en route to being named team MVP. Zuercher, who was also the MVP of the GLC in the Boys Cross Country season, was an All-Ohio performer as was senior teammate Riley Robinette. Zuercher, Robinette and senior Joey Nanni were All-GLC first-teamers. Earning Second Team finishes at the GLC Championships last month were Jack McDonough and Adam Bakir. Steve Stahl was the 2017 GLC Coach of the Year.
Stahl’s eight-man crew (Zuercher, Robinette, Nanni, McDonough, Bakir, Jacob Auvil, Will St. Pierre, Will Thesken) swept the GLC, district and regional races before placing fifth at the state meet earlier this month.
On the girls’ side, junior Mafe Chaves-Bernal was a First Team All-GLC performer and a member of the all-district squad. Jane Murray also earned a First Team All-GLC time in the circuit’s championship meet last month. Katie Wojnowski was an all-league second-teamer.
“2017 was a rebuilding year for us,” said Head Coach Dee Zuercher, “I was really happy having nine newcomers. Hopefully, we will get another nine girls to come out next year, and we will have a solid team. As they say, there is strength in numbers.”
