ELYRIA, Ohio – The Pirates were on the wrong end of a 78-43 game against Great Lakes Conference foe Elyria Catholic on Wednesday night. [RR game stats]
A solid Panthers team which has lost just once in GLC play and had received votes in the first Ohio Division III Associated Press poll released earlier in the week jumped out to a 28-10 lead in the first quarter. Rocky River (5-6, 3-2 GLC) answered with a fine second quarter, but the contest went sideways from there.
“They’re a good team, and when we cut into their lead by halftime we talked about slowly chipping away at the lead even more,” said Head Coach Elaine Robinson. “But they had some big answers to our defense and hit some big shots in the second half.”
That second half also saw the Panthers (8-4, 3-1) keep the Pirates off the scoreboard in long stretches. River would manage just 16 points over quarters three and four, as the home five played out the win.
Rocky River’s leading scorers on the night were Anne Beirne (12 points), Hanna Chapman (seven) and Nani Meese (seven). Those three combined to tally 26 points on a 10-of-22 shooting performance. The rest of the team struggled to find a rhythm on offense: eight other players combined to shoot just 21 percent (6-of-29) from the floor.
On the glass, the Maroon & White were led by Beirne (nine rebounds)and Samantha Miller (five).
The Panthers’ 78 points mark the most the Pirates have yielded in a single game this season. Coming through a difficult section of its 2017-18 schedule, Rocky River has now dropped four straight games.
Wednesday’s contest marked the front half of a GLC road double for the Pirates this week; River will be at Normandy on Saturday.
