KENT, Ohio – Rocky River bounced back from a disappointing Friday performance to record a 9-0 victory over Western Reserve on Sunday afternoon.
After falling to Shaker Heights, 3-1, in a Friday battle for supremacy in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Red North Division, the Pirates pummeled the Pioneers, outshooting them, 58-8, and controlling the contest throughout.
An Aidan Dempsey goal assisted by Luke Witzigreuter marked River’s lone goal in 19 shots on goal in the first period. The floodgates opened in the second, with the Pirates (15-10, 5-2 GCHSHL Red North) putting 21 more shots on target and getting five of those past the Pioneer goaltender. A Teddy Stueber goal assisted by Eddie Zuercher and Danny McFarland at the 12:30-mark got the Maroon & White going in the second. Stueber would be followed into the net by Hayden Weaver and Logan Fortune over the next five minutes of play. A second Stueber goal was forthcoming at the 4:55-mark. A minute later Danny Asmar got into the act, and River closed out the 15-minute frame with five goals, its most in a single period this season.
Spencer Asmar logged two assists in the big second period. Four of Rocky River’s five goals were scored even-strength; Stueber’s second goal of the period was a powerplay netfinder assisted by Noah Hess.
River closed out the blowout win with third-period goals by Hayden Weaver, Nolan Weaver and Logan Fortune.
