varsity girls basketball · Copley drops Pirates, 58-49

COPLEY, Ohio – Rocky River dropped a non-conference game, 58-49, at Copley on Monday night.

The host Indians capitalized on a big second quarter and a fine 12-of-16 performance at the free-throw line in dispatching a Pirate five which has now dropped 4-of-its-last-5.

Rocky River (7-12) was led by Anne Beirne who scored 16 points.

Copley outscored Rocky River, 13-10, over the first quarter. The Indians extended that lead into double digits by halftime by holding River to jut two field goals in quarter No. 2. Over that second frame, Copley doubled up the Pirates, 16-8.

The Indians extended their lead to 15 (43-28) by the end of the third. The endgame fourth permitted the Pirates a comeback of sorts. Beirne scored 13 points as part of a 21-15 period in favor of the visitors.

Nani Meese scored in every quarter and finished with nine points in the game. Hanna Chapman added eight.

Beirne added to her 16 points with nine rebounds, three assists, a block and two steals. For the game, the Pirates were out-rebounded by a small margin; River was a minus-6 in the turnover exchange (RR 21 turnovers to Copley’s 15).

Albeit with the lion’s share of her points coming in the fourth quarter, Beirne’s 16 points in the contest mark her most in a single game since Dec. 16.

Rocky River was just 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc and that continues a cold spell for the Maroon & White. Rocky River has now shot just 17.1 percent (18-for-105) on threes over its last five games.
