ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Since mid-January, and in games both won and lost, Head Coach Mike Murray has seen big efforts, solid execution and some gutty team defense on most nights.
Friday was not one of those nights.
The Pirates were pounded by the Panthers of Elyria Catholic, 78-56, with three EC players combining to score 68 points in what was a wire-to-wire win for the home side. The Panthers outscored the Pirates, 21-11, in a dominant first quarter and 22-6 in a decisive third frame.
“This was a really rough night for us,” said Murray, whose team had been 4-3 over its seven previous games since a mid-winter turnaround. “We were out of sorts all night. We called three early timeouts to try to refocus, but we couldn’t get it together.”
Not getting it together spelled big runs for Elyria Catholic, a team that has now swept its season series with the Pirates. Hitting threes early and then scoring from all over the floor in the third, the Panthers built a one-sided 61-33 lead by the end three quarters. Dorian Crutcher scored a game-high 34 for Elyria Catholic.
Rocky River (6-12, 3-8 Great Lakes Conference) was paced by senior forward Oliver Clingain who scored 15 points. Joey Coffman, Luke Coyne and John Ruma added nine points each.
