Boys Varsity Golf · Eagles squeak past Pirates

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio — Rocky River fell, 160-166, in a tight non-conference match against St. Edward on Thursday.

On what marked Senior Day for the Pirates, senior Tommy Kelly carded a 4-over 40 to lead the squad. Kelly’s score — his best in a nine-hole match since Aug. 20 — was built on the strength of five pars and four bogeys over the outward nine on a dry afternoon at Big Met Golf Course. River’s top man on Thursday has logged an improved 85.3 average over the last two weeks.

Kelly was backed up by sophomore Will Bennett, who rallied after an opening triple on No. 1 to fire a 41. Matthew McDonald (42) and Mac Milenius (43) were River’s No. 3- and 4-men on the day.

With Thursday’s loss, the Pirates fell to 10-4 on the season.

Kelly and fellow senior Ryan Kosmerl were Rocky River’s honorees on the day. The sons of Bill and Dawn Kelly and Rich and Darcy Kosmerl have been with the program for four years.
