HINCKLEY, Ohio – River’s “last man standing” closed out his 2018 campaign at the Ohio Division I Boys’ Golf Northeast District Tournament on Monday. [results]
Will Bennett’s fine sophomore season came to a close with an 87 at Pine Hills G.C. Bennett carded nines of 45 and 42 over the 6,782-yard, par-72 track in Hinckley, Ohio. Rocky River’s lone qualifier out of last week’s sectional tournament placed in a tie for 94th place in a field of the best 120 golfers Northeast Ohio high school golf has to offer.
“It was fun to watch Will compete,” said Head Coach David Hendrickson. “He represents Rocky River and our program so well. I’m proud of him for his accomplishments and efforts, and I look forward to seeing more great things out of him.”
Great things were certainly in Bennett in his 2018 sophomore season. The returning River letterman was a leader on a team that captured its fourth straight Great Lakes Conference championship. Bennett carded a First Team All-GLC score (83) at the circuit’s title meet on Sept. 24 (he’s now a two-time All-GLC first teamer). For the season, he posted a stroke average of 82.3, edging out junior Mac Milenius for low on the team.
Buoying that average were fine tournament performances: a 79 in the season opener at Pine Brook, a 77 at Oberlin C.C., an 82 at Columbia Hills C.C., a fine 81-83—164 over two days on a challenging Quail Hollow G.C. and an under-pressure 82 at last week’s sectional event at the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar. In nine-hole matches, he logged River’s No. 1 score five times during the season.
But in an unforgiving game that cares not about last year much less yesterday, can Bennett help lead Rocky River to a team advance next fall? Can he, himself, advance to the Buckeye State tournament?
Where there’s a Will, there’s a way.
