ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River and Chagrin Falls played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night. The Pirates struck for a goal mid-match, and the Tigers managed an equalizer in the 77th minute of what marked the final match of the regular season for both teams.
Chagrin Falls (9-3-4) hadn’t allowed a goal since Sept. 27 – a run of four matches – but that streak was sullied by River freshman Sophia Murray who scored her seventh goal of the season in the 41st minute. Murray’s goal came on a finish of an Allison Contenza corner kick.
Aiming for a seventh shutout in 2018, a stout Rocky River (8-6-2) defense would preserve the 1-0 until the waning moments of the contest.
In the 77th minute, it was Tiger junior Bella Dalessandro who rifled a 30-yard free kick into the top-left corner of the Pirate net. The netfinder marked Dalessandro’s seventh of the season and it knotted the proceedings at 1-1.
Chagrin Falls nearly added one more – on a near-miss of a hard 15-yarder over the crossbar with 90 seconds remaining in the match.
With Murray scoring a goal on what was a breezy autumn evening at Rocky River Stadium, the freshman forward has now registered goals in back-to-back matches and in 3-of-River’s-last-4. With her helper on the Murray goal, Contenza has now logged four assists over the Pirates’ last two games. She has a team-high nine assists on the season and 23 in her four-year career.
With River’s regular season ending, the Pirates can now turn their focus to Firelands, their foe in next Wednesday’s sectional tournament contest at Rocky River Stadium (7 p.m.).
