Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · River XC teams advance to regionals

ELYRIA, Ohio – Rocky River’s Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country squads competed in the Northeast Ohio/Elyria District Championships on Saturday. Both teams qualified for regional competition, and their seasons will continue. [results: boys | girls]

With top-5 finishes required to move forward in the postseason, the Pirate boys placed fifth and the River girls carded third.

On the boys’ side, Rocky River athletes earned five top-50 finishes en route to posting a team score of 179. That score edged out Fairview (191) for the fifth-and-final qualifying slot in the 16-team Division II race over the 5K course at LCCC. The defending Elyria District Division II champions were led by senior captain Jack McDonough who carded a 12th-place finish in a field of 116 runners. River’s lone athlete with district meet experience (McDonough placed sixth in the 2017 district race) blazed the course in 17 minutes-and-10 seconds.

McDonough was joined on the scoresheet by fellow senior captain Jacob Dorenkott (42nd, 18:23) as well as sophomore Luke Kishna (31st, 18:00), junior Patrick Bennett (46th, 18:31), and sophomore Seth Williams (48th, 18:33). Williams’ time marked a personal best.

The Pirate girls earned their third-place finish on the fleet feet of two freshmen. Samantha Coleman (19:51) and Ella Russell (20:04) placed second and fourth, respectively, helping River register a five-man score of 104. Rounding out the scoring five for the Maroon & White were senior Mafe Chaves-Bernal (27th, 21:21), senior Katie Wojnowski (34th, 21:49), and sophomore Marcella Pfaff (37th, 21:57).

Rocky River’s performance on Saturday marked a 10-step climb from a 13th-place finish at the same meet a year ago.

The district champion in the DII boys’ race was Woodridge, which boasted five top-10 finishers in logging a team score of 31. Avon Lake (62 points) edged out Avon (68) for the top spot on the girls’ side. The DI girls’ race was comprised of 13 teams and 93 runners.

River’s teams are now bound for the Northeast Regional meet, which will be held in Boardman, Ohio, on Saturday.
