NORWALK, Ohio — Pirate Wrestling closed out its 2018-19 season with four grapplers competing in Division II Northwest District Tournament action on Friday and Saturday. [results]
Junior Matt Williams was Rocky River’s lone winner on the weekend, going 1-2 with a pin at 106 pounds. Senior Josh Bergin (126 pounds), senior Tommy Koch (182) and junior Mahdi Salti (182) each went 0-2 in the double-elimination-formatted regional step to next week’s Ohio DII Championships in Columbus, Ohio (March 7-9, Jerome Schottenstein Center).
“All four guys had very tough draws in the first round,” said Head Coach Dan Juliani.
Juliani rolled his assessment of the weekend into a state-of-the-program overview, noting the senior leadership of Bergin and Koch and the valuable tournament experience gained by Williams and Salti:
“I’m extremely proud and grateful for having both [Josh and Tommy] be leaders of this team and buy in to the new culture we are trying to grow in the program. I hope the younger guys took note and will follow in their example in the coming years. Our juniors — Matt Williams and Mahdi Salti — got valuable experience and saw what it is going to take to get to that next level in their senior seasons. I’m very pleased with the season and excited to grow the program into a powerhouse.”
Friday and Saturday’s district action was held at Norwalk High School.
