LAKEWOOD, Ohio – River’s Track & Field squads garnered gold and silver at the 37th Annual Ranger Relays on Friday. The Pirate girls edged North Royalton by the slimmest of margins to claim first place; the Rocky River boys carded second place. The Pirates took first in the meet’s combined standings. [results]
The girls in Maroon & White tallied 112 team points in the 14-event competition hosted by Lakewood High School. That total topped North Royalton (110) and six other teams on what was a breezy evening at Lakewood Stadium. Rocky River registered top-step podium finishes in five events (4×400-meter relay, 4×800, distance medley relay, 100-meter hurdles, 4×1600) in the specialized relay-scoring format. River also took six seconds and three thirds.
The Pirate girls have now won the Ranger Relays three times in the last four years (2016, 2017).
The River boys won five events en route to scoring 79 points. Only Berea-Midpark (102) posted a higher figure in a field of eight teams. River swept the throwing relays, with Michael Shoaf leading the way in the shot put relay and Shoaf and Paul Broschk pacing the Pirate effort in the discus relay. The Maroon & White also carded wins in the distance medley, the 4×800, and the 3200-meter run. Luke Kishna turned aside all comers in the 3200 with a final time of 10:25.81.
The finishes for the boys and girls were an improvement – both teams logged third-place finishes at the 2018 Ranger Relays.
