ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River logged a runner-up finish in Wednesday Great Lakes Conference Tournament.
The Pirates earned two doubles titles and three second-place finishes in singles en route to tallying 17 points in the five-team event. The Bay Rockets (18 points) won the event. The names, places and point totals spelled a reprise of last year’s final (May 2, 2018) in which Bay won the league tournament, outscoring second-place Rocky River, 18-17.
On Wednesday, the doubles duos of Christian Devorace-Julian Clark (first doubles) and Ethan Mylett-Ryan Kosmerl (second doubles) went a combined 4-0 at Tri-City Park. Mylett and Kosmerl did their damage in straight sets. Devorace and Clark rallied from opening-set losses in each of two matches. They defeated Bay’s Cam Grealis and Cesar Obregon, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the championship final in first doubles.
In singles play, Tony Ilias went 1-1 to place second in first singles. Jack Bowers went 1-1 (and was narrowly bested in the final) in second singles. Jack Latham went 1-1 to finish as the runner-up in third singles.
Bowers’ loss in the second singles final marked his first since March 30. The freshman is 11-3 in singles play this season.
The doubles wins Wednesday continue tremendous 2019 campaigns for the teams of Devorace-and-Clark and Mylett-and-Kosmerl. Devorace and Clark are now 10-3 as a tandem, Mylett and Kosmerl are 7-1.
