ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River swept the Holy Name Green Wave in a rainy, windy home meet o Wednesday. And with the victories, both the boys’ and girls’ teams pulled off regular season sweeps of six Great Lakes Conference foes.
The Rocky River boys topped Holy Name, 84-53. The River girls dominated the Green Wave, 113-15.
The Pirate boys won 12 events. Jack McDonough (4×800-meter relay, 800-meter run), Gabe Saad (4×800, 4×200), Mahdi Salti (4×200, 400-meter dash), Daishaun Hill (110-meter high hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Michael Shoaf (shot put, discus) figured in multiple wins on the day.
On the girls’ side, the Maroon & White took first place in 16 events. Rocky River swept three relays. Individual winners included Sarah Mazzie (100), Saraa Abuzahrieh (400), MaKenna Pfaff (100-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles), Sam Coleman (800), Taylor Byall (200), Ursula Heimke (pole vault), Daijah Hill (high jump), Leah Schellentrager (long jump) and Amanda Franz (shot, discus)
Both squads finished the regular dual-meet season undefeated (7-0, 6-0 GLC).

SENIOR SALUTE: River’s Girls’ and Boys’ programs held a post-meet ceremony to recognize the 2019 graduating class of Pirate Track & Field. Seniors on the girls’ team: Lydia Brandt, Mafe Chaves, Allison Contenza, Beth Erml, Daijah Hill, Ava Rauser, Stella Wischmeier and Katie Wojnowski. Seniors on the boys’ team: Jaret Boettcher, Kenny Bollin, Paul Broschk, Jacob Dorenkott, Daishaun Hill, Daniel Hornig, Jack McDonough, Ryan O’Donnell, Hunter Piguet, Gabe Saad and Michael Shoaf. … Four-year members of the program will have a chance to go 4-for-4 in a career sweep of Great Lakes Conference titles when the GLC holds its title meet next week (May 7, 9). The River boys’ and girls’ squads have been GLC champs each of the last three years (2016-18).
ON DECK: Rocky River High School will host the 44th Annual Bell Invitational on Friday.
