Boys Varsity Tennis · Bay edges River in Senior Day clash at Tri-City

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The Pirates ended their 2019 Great Lakes Conference season with a hard-fought loss to Bay on Monday. In an epic showdown of the two top teams in the conference, the Rockets prevailed, 3-2, in a contest that featured three matches going three sets.

Two matches – Tony Ilias losing to state qualifier Ben Anderson in straight sets and the tandem of Christian Devorace and Julian Clark handling their foe in first doubles in similar fashion – were over in short order. The remaining three would be remarkable tussles testing every combatant on every point.

River’s duo of Aidan Walsh and Ryan Kosmerl came from a set down to win second doubles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. In third singles, Jack Latham dominated in his first set but fell, 6-2, 2-6, 4-6. Those results squared the match at 2-2 with Jack Bowers and Bay’s Adam Zeidler engaged in a see-saw battle in second singles. In what was a marathon affair, Bowers was bested, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.

And with that, the Rockets clinched the GLC regular-season title a week after topping the league field in the GLC Tournament. In that event, Bay edged runner-up River, 18-17.

“This was a hell of a match,” said Head Coach Ben Purdy. “You can’t get more competitive events than the last two we’ve played.”

Monday’s match at Tri-City Park marked Senior Day for Rocky River Tennis. The program honored the contributions of Chris Baxley, Christian Devorace, Sonny Fricano, Eamon Havemann, Tony Ilias, Mickey Kelley, Ryan Kosmerl, Valentin Neculescu, John Ruma, Finlay Stamer and Aidan Walsh.
