MENTOR, Ohio – Rocky River won for a fourth time in its last five games, as the Pirates defeated the Lake Catholic Cougars, 17-6, on Monday night.

Senior Lauren Cain scored River’s first six goals in the contest and has now dented twine 17 times over the team’s last three games. The Maroon & White boasted no less than seven goal scorers on a night that saw the Pirates net their season-high in goals scored.

Cain’s fourth of the night broke the Pirates loose from a 3-3 contest. The goal – scored at the 9:32-mark of the opening half – was the start of a 4-0 run for the visiting River squad. That surge was the centerpiece of an 8-4 halftime lead. The Cougars got as close as two (8-6) early in the second half, but the Striped Buccaneers scored eight unanswered over the final 20 minutes of play in pulling off the rout on the road. Goalkeeper Hannah Burgess, who split time with Evie Kelly with each twine-tender taking a half, stopped each of the last seven shots Lake Catholic put on frame. Rocky River’s two ‘keepers would combine to register an impressive 13 saves on the night.

Gabrielle Avila scored two of River’s final eight in the late-game run. Avila was particularly active in River’s play at both ends of the field. She finished the game with two goals, an assist, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

On the evening, Rocky River (9-6) got multiple goals from Avila (two), Cain (six), Allie Kysela (three) and Ana Konrad (two). The Pirates carded five assists in the game, with three coming off the cross of Rachel Solecki.

The groundball brigade was led by Sam Miller (six), Konrad (five), Ellie Duncan (four), Lauren Cain (three) and Kailey Budzar (three). Budzar (two), Cain (three) and Grace Harte (two) logged multiple caused turnovers.

Rocky River’s 17 goals marked the team’s most in a single game since the Pirates scored 18 against Lake Catholic on March 26, 2018.

Monday’s tilt marked the first of three on the week for the Pirates. Rocky River will be at Hathaway Brown on Wednesday and then host Wooster on Saturday.
