ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Green Wave pitching was staked to an early 2-0 lead and would make that lead hold up in wire-to-wire fashion, as Holy Name defeated Rocky River, 12-2, in Great Lakes Conference action on Friday.
The Pirates were held to just three hits in the contest; none of those came with runners in scoring position – the Maroon & White were 0-for-7 in that department. Senior Tommy Kelly was River’s lone batter to reach more than once in the game: Kelly went 1-for-1 with a single and a pair of walks.
On the other side of the equation, the Green Wave scored in 5-of-6 innings. They were aided in those efforts by seven Rocky River errors. Nine walks issued by River hurlers added to the traffic on the bases, as the Pirates (8-12, 5-6 GLC) had a three-game win streak snapped and fell a game under .500 in circuit play.
With his performance on Friday, Tommy Kelly has now reached base in seven consecutive games. Over that stretch, Kelly is batting .474 (9-of-19) with a .615 on-base percentage. For the season, the veteran infielder and relief hurler has reached base at a .473 clip. That percentage ranks fourth on the team.
